Springtime is Calving Season @ Schenker's
Spring has finally sprung at Schenker Family Farms. Each day is getting a little warmer and new life is popping up all over, whether it's in the fresh blades of grass our animals are grazing on or the happy little calves being born.
Each day I wake up filled with anticipation and head out to the pastures. I am anxious to see if we have any "new babies" born. This time of year, I am rarely disappointed. We have been getting one or two new ones each day. One of my favorites, is a little heifer (girl) calf born this week. She is solid black, except for a tiny white heart-shaped mark on her forehead. I've seen a lot of white marks on black calves, but never one in the shape of a heart. Since we already have a calf named "Miss Valentine" (born on St. Valentine's Day), I think we'll name her "Miss Sweetheart."
Just think, in a few days we'll have baby chicks ready to start looking for grass and bugs for dinner. Farm life is a lot of work, but I can't think of a better way to live or a better way to enjoy life.
